In Daytime of the Night Michael Harrison presents a new series of his distinctive dreamlike watercolour and pencil works on paper. Working on a small scale he builds up compositions over a long period of time (sometimes years) using a very personal cumulative language of symbols and imagery. These elements become progressively loaded with meaning as Harrison’s work evolves. In delicate, almost transparent watercolour he distills the essence of a vaguely remembered dream, the distortion that occurs when you look at something for too long, the way things are seen in the mind’s eye. Recurring horses, cats and human figures often take centre stage while soft, often indefinable silhouettes crowd the periphery. These intriguingly subtle works both encourage and reward our quiet participation. |
