In an eerie painting from a new series by Anne Wallace, a stream of rats swarms up the steps of a classical building as the sun sets, seemingly intent on taking up residence for the night. We are compelled to consider from what they flee… and what lies behind the crumbling edifice. In other works figures stand motionless outside suburban homes, lurk in doorways or skulk in the undergrowth. A young woman wanders casually down a thickly forested country road, the brooding atmosphere suggesting something sinister around the next bend. We sense that something momentous or horrifying has just taken place or is just about to. Wallace’s works masterfully capture the pivotal moment between dramatic action where the narrative is suspended and we are left searching for answers.
